Longines watches: Precision and elegance
Longines is one of the most recognized watch brands in the world for its quality, precision, and elegance. Since its founding in 1832, this Swiss brand has stood out for creating watches that combine the latest technology with sophisticated designs for both men and women. In this article, we present the history, features, and advantages of Longines watches to help you choose the model that best suits your needs.
History of Longines
August Agassiz was the founder of the Saint-Imier watch agency, which was later managed by his nephew, Ernest Francillon, who would go on to open the Longines factory in 1867.
Its first connections were with American horseracing, where Longines began to establish itself in the stands of racetracks, and jockeys started wearing their watches. It was in the United States where Jacques David, Longines’ Technical Director, found the production system that they would later use in Switzerland to create their watches.
The adventurous spirit of Longines watches comes from the expedition to conquer the North Pole led by Prince Luigi Amadeo of Savoy, where Longines played a part.
After numerous calibers were created, Longines became the most recognized brand in the events organized to award the performance of watches from that era.
Longines would be named the official supplier to the International Aeronautical Federation due to the precision and reliability of its watches, and as a result, Longines became the entity responsible for recording aviation records.
Subsequently, together with the U.S. Navy, Longines developed a watch that allowed the second hand to be synchronized with a GMT signal.
Based on this design, pilot Charles A. Lindbergh came up with a navigation instrument that Longines would be able to materialize. This watch would help pilots geolocate their position using the latitude and longitude provided by the watch.
In 1936, Longines created one of the most important calibers for the brand, the 13ZN. Over the years, Longines would continue to refine its watches and calibers.
In 1954, Longines developed its first quartz watch that broke all precision records, capable of taking measurements to 1/100th of a second, which allowed tracking athletes’ movements. That same year, Longines launched the first Conquest collection.
Three years later, in 1957, the Flagship collection was released.
In 1967, Longines launched the 11 ½-line automatic caliber as an alternative to quartz and electronic movements used by other brands at the time. This caliber was featured in the Ultra-Chron collection.
Two years later, in 1969, Longines introduced the first cybernetic quartz caliber for a wristwatch, the L6512, better known as Ultra-Quartz.
With the rise of quartz watches from other brands, Longines continued to focus on mechanical movements.
In 1982, the famous Longines La Grande Classique collection was launched, which gained great popularity in the watchmaking world.
Years later, Longines would partner with various sports competitions, including Formula 1 and rhythmic gymnastics.
In 1997, Longines launched the famous DolceVita women’s collection, which gained significant acceptance among young and female audiences. High elegance and beauty in a wristwatch.
With the return of mechanical movement watches, Longines launched the Master Collection in 2005, a collection that represented its experience and tradition in the watchmaking world.
A couple of years later, Longines launched its Sport Collection, inspired by athletes, featuring the following lines: Conquest, HydroConquest, Admiral, and GrandeVitesse.
That same year, Longines added the finishing touch to its horological tradition with the Master Collection Retrograde.
After years of focusing on men’s watches, Longines decided to reintroduce a women’s collection, the Longines PrimaLuna collection, in 2009.
In the following years, Longines would release new collections such as the Master Collection Retrograde Moonphase, the Saint-Imier Collection, a tribute to the city where the brand was born, and the Equestrian Lépine collection, inspired by the 1927 Lépine pocket watch.
