In addition to showing the hours, minutes, and seconds, it also has an opening at 3 o’clock showing the date. The movement oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 alternations per hour (4 Hz) and is regulated by a variable inertia balance with a silicon balance spring, ensuring its robustness thanks to a transversal bridge. The movement has been certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).

The TUDOR Black Bay takes its lines and its domed crystal from the brand’s first dive watch, the TUDOR Submariner reference 7922 from 1954. It also reflects the characteristic domed dial, a detail that was common in the first TUDOR Submariners but later disappeared. Its imposing crown is a nod to the model released in 1958 under reference 7924, known as the “Big Crown” by collectors. Its hands, with their distinctive angular shape, also known as “snowflakes,” have been used by TUDOR from 1969 to the early 1980.

In 2009, while most luxury Swiss watch brands still overlooked or considered fabric straps unworthy of their products’ level of sophistication, TUDOR embraced it as an ideal accessory for development. The TUDOR Style Workshop, always on the lookout for subtle details that enhance the pleasure of wearing the watch, recognized the stylistic potential of this accessory and, following its perfectionist logic, commissioned a traditional embroidery company to create its own interpretation of the fabric strap.

Inspired by the military

The use of fabric straps in watches, like many other widely adopted innovations, originates in the military. In the early 1970s, NATO standardized the use of a nylon watch strap. Though economical and not particularly comfortable, it was sporty and easy to replace. Interest in fabric straps revived in the early 2000s among collectors. When TUDOR’s Style Workshop became interested in the fabric strap, they completely rethought its design to create an adjustable length strap inspired by the design of vintage car seat belts. They found a solution by adding “tunnels” to house the pins that securely hold the strap in place. They then turned to one of the last remaining French traditional trim companies that masters the “Jacquard” textile technique, which allows for near-limitless design experimentation. The “Jacquard” technique offers, among other benefits, a high-density weave that provides strength and softness to the ribbons it produces.
